Blog

Welcome to the Seattle Attic blog.  This is where we will post news updates, as well as projects that our members have made.

  • GiveBig to Support Feminist Makers!

GiveBig logo - Donate to Seattle AtticUpdate: Due to technical difficulties, GiveBig will be extended to midnight May 4th.

Seattle Attic will be participating this year in the Seattle Foundation’s annual GiveBig charity fundraising drive! On May 3rd, the Seattle Foundation will be coordinating a massive one-day fundraising drive in conjunction with many local non-profit organizations. GiveBig will be adding to your donations to the Attic on May 3rd in two ways: through a random drawing and a “stretch fund”. Every hour an additional $1000 will be given to a randomly chosen non-profit that has gotten a donation during that hour, and at the end of the day they will be dividing a large amount of money among all participating non-profits proportional to amount raised by each non-profit.

In short: the more you give to the Attic, the more funds we can get from GiveBig!

This is our first big fundraiser campaign since our original Indiegogo campaign back in 2013. Thanks to your generosity during that initial fundraiser and your ongoing support for the next two and a half years, we were able to focus our efforts on building up our community and our space. The original Indiegogo funds helped us establish our scholarship fund, which supports members who wish to be a part of our community but, for any reason, do not have the financial resources to do so. The scholarship fund has been a great success, and has enabled us to build a community that’s open to a more diverse group of members.

Alas, almost three years later, our scholarship fund is running low. In addition to replenishing the fund, we are hoping to grow it so we can expand membership recruitment this year. With a larger membership, we will be able to expand our space in size and bring in more tools and resources (including a Glowforge; more on that in a later blog post) for our members and guests.

So help support us May 3rd for GiveBig. With your support, we can continue to grow our community of feminist makers, crafters and hackers. If you’re worried about forgetting, you can join our (low volume) mailing list, our Meetup group, or follow our Twitter account. You can even schedule your donations in advance on our GiveBig profile page.

  • New Year, New Org, New Site

This new year is starting off with a bang for Seattle Attic.

(Okay, yes, it's April, but a lot has happened! So let's recap, so you can come enjoy our changes with us!)

We have received approval from the IRS to become our own 501c3 organization, instead of working under the umbrella of our fiscal sponsor, Independent Arts and Media.  We were already doing about 75% of the organizational work, and IAM is helping us get set up to manage the rest on our own. IAM is something of a launch pad for groups like ours, and it is something we are truly proud of that we could take what we started with them to the next level.

We have also revamped our web site, as you can see. It's still Attic-member designed, but we've got a ticker for MeetUp, and we're hoping for more regular blog posts and updates to share news and opportunities with our community.

We're also partnering with Mini Maker Faire Seattle to help expand our message and theirs of building, learning, communicating and equality.
